Removing Walls for an Open Concept: How to Tell if a Wall is Load-Bearing

Transforming a cramped, compartmentalized house into a bright, open-concept dream home is one of the most highly requested remodeling projects across Southern California. While only a professional can give you a definitive answer, there are a few clues that can hint at a wall’s structural importance. First, take a look at the attic or crawl space. If the floor joists or roof trusses run perpendicular to the wall in question, it is almost certainly bearing a load. Additionally, exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, as are walls that run straight down the center spine of the house. On the other hand, partition walls that run parallel to the joists above them are usually just decorative room dividers. However, modern construction and previous undocumented remodels can easily break these rules, making assumptions incredibly risky.

The Safe Way to Create an Open Layout

The good news is that almost any wall can be removed—as long as you have the right plan to replace its structural support. When a load-bearing wall is demolished, it must be replaced with a heavy-duty structural beam, typically made of engineered wood (LVL) or steel. This beam catches the weight from the floor above and transfers it horizontally to structural posts hidden inside the remaining walls, safely guiding the load down to the foundation.

Sizing this beam is not a guessing game. If the beam is too small, your ceiling will sag; if the support posts aren’t resting on solid concrete footings beneath the floor, they will punch straight through your subfloor. Before finalizing your demolition plan and pulling any city permits, it’s absolutely critical to work with experienced consulting structural engineers.
